Cortona Camping Badiaccia

CORTONA

Just 12 km from the camping , surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, Cortona rises on a hill rested on Saint Egidio Mount, it offers one of the best views of the whole area.

Situated at 500 metres above sea level, Cortona dominates the entire Valdichiana, with a view that stretches as far as Mount Amiata and Mount Cetona and the Lake Trasimeno.

Founded by Etruscans, Cortona rises entirely surrounded by fortifications, its typical tiny streets, houses, churches and monasteries remind us the Middle Ages  and The  Renaissance, hile the last centuries seem to be gone without a trace. Cortona was homeland and destination of a lot of Saints and Artists, like for example San Francis of Assisi, who founded here Eremo delle Celle; or Luca Signorelli and Pietro Berrettini who left the marks of their genius. To visit: Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Casali (MAEC Museum), Via Nazionale, Via Iannelli a typical medieval street; Santa Margherita Sanctuary and much more. Don’t forget to take part in the famous grilled steak festival!!!!

MONTEPULCIANO

Just 25 km from the camping , you find Montepulciano “Renaissance Pearl”. The very interesting town of Montepulciano, named “Pearl of ‘500”, has to be visited not only to admire its art and architectural treasures but also to test its fantastic and delicious red wine: Vino Nobile and to fit the body with its thermal bath.

The city is constructed along a ridge, which varies in level of between 50-60 metres and is reflected along the 1½ kilometres of main central street, that starts at the Porta al Prato and goes up to the Piazza Grande: the houses are arranged along the main street and in a series of short and narrow streets, often steep and more or less perpendicular.

Almost all the buildings of major importance appear along the main street and constitute a long series of facades almost like an exhibition of high level design. The strong  growth of the wine market in the area is very high, as the pleasures of the Nobile di Montepulciano wine have been known at least since the 8th century AD.

Montepulciano, the town where Poliziano was born, is a fantastic tourist destination with a lot of interesting monuments, like Piazza GrandePozzo de Grifi e dei LeoniPalazzo Comunale, Palazzo Cantucci, Palazzo Nobili Targhi, Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, Palazzo Tarugi del Vignola, Palazzo Avignonesi, Palazzo Gagnoni Giugni del Vignola, Palazzo Cervini; Duomo and several churches. Special event of the year: The famous festival Il Bravio delle Botti (last Sunday of August).

Montepulciano Camping Badiaccia

PIENZA

Just 30 Km from the campsite, situated in the heart of Val D’Orcia, Pienza is a typical medieval village which became a town according to the wishes of Pope Pio II.

In that occasion the village until then called Corsigliano was named Pienza. Pope Pio II tried to model the town according to the model of XV century. Today Pienza is famous for its typical production of sheep cheese. Places to visit: Casa dei Canonici, Palazzo Vescovile, Palazzo Piccolomini, Palazzo Comunale, Via delle Case Nuove and the numerous picturesque streets.

SIENA

About 60 Km from the campsite, easily reached by train or by car, Siena deserves a visit being one of the most beautiful and famous cities of Tuscany.

Surrounded by an enchanting landscape, full of important art, architectural and historical monuments, Siena is one of the most beautiful town in Italy and maybe in the world. Situated  on the top of three hills, Siena is crossed by wide and narrow streets, which lead to the heart of the city: Piazza del Campo and to all the other cultural buildings like for example the Cathedral and Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala.

Famous for the Palio, an historical horse race , that takes place every year on the 2th of July and on 16th of August, Siena is also famous for its university that is considered one of the oldest in Europe. Siena offers a lot of daily cultural events, concerts, cinemas, theatres and a lot of sport activities.

Siena has always been devoted to its tradition and to its land. Here there were special schools and traditions, which created a sort of cultural microcosm: for example for many centuries Siena kept even its own calendar. With its unique and well preserved medieval architecture, Siena is the ideal destination for all the people who love art and beauty.

AREZZO

Situated just 40 Km from the campsite, Arezzo, famous all over the world for its goldsmith’s art, lies on the hillside among Casentino, Valdarno and Val di Chiana.

It is a little jewel surrounded by Walls of the thirteenth century, where the first Sunday of each Month a typical antique market takes place. Arezzo has an Etruscan origin, it was allied of the Romans (“Arretium”), but the buildings of that time were destroyed by Barbarian invasions.

After a long period of decline, Arezzo returned to be thriving in the communal period, until it was dominated by Florence, which led to a change in its urban scenery and a new decline that ended only after the Unification of Italy.

The city has walls that encircle along the current via Garibaldi, which are a continuation of the Etruscan-Roman ones. From this magnificent city are some famous personalities: from Petrarch to Vasari and Aretino.

With the construction of the Rome-Florence, the town became more modern, with the new via Guido Monaco, whose expansion occurred over the years in parallel to industrial development. During summer, in late June and early September, don’t miss the famed Giostra del Saracino, a knightly Tournament in which they challenge the districts of the town, recalling the ancient splendor of the city.

FIRENZE

About 90 km far from the campsite, Florence is easy to reach by train through the railway line Terontola-Firenze. Of course, it is the city that symbolizes the Italian Renaissance, homeland of famous artists, sculptors, painters, writers, poets, such as Dante Alighieri, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Giotto and Petrarch. Monuments, museums, drawings and architectural treasures make it one of the loveliest and appreciated tourist destinations of Tuscany.

In Florence, you can admire Giotto’s bell Tower, Brunelleschi’s Cupola, Piazza della Signoria with its important statues, the characteristic Ponte Vecchio, where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the river Arno, the famous churches of Santa Croce, Santo Spirito, Santa Maria Novella, the famous Galleria degli Uffizi full of important paintings, Piazzale Michelangelo, Palazzo Pitti, Giardino di Boboli, and Corridoio Vasariano overpassing the city, which was realized by Vasari (it starts from Palazzo Pitti and goes through to Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio, until Palazzo Pitti) and hosts an art gallery with a wonderful collection of portraits.

MONTALCINO

About 65 km far from the campsite, Montalcino, the pearl of Val d’Orcia, is renowned around the world for the production of its extraordinary Brunello wine.

Sheltered on a hill between Mount Amiata and Siena, surrounded by impressive walls and overlooked by the fortress of the 15th century, Montalcino is an enchating fabled beauty. The village has remained almost intact since the 16th century and offers visitors a splendid view over the hills of Val d’Orcia, a Unesco World Heritage site. You can breathe everywhere the sweet smell of wine, whose recipe was invented in 1888 by Ferruccio Biondi Santi and then became one of the finest wines in the world. Don’t miss the Jazz & Wine Festival held in July to join good music and good wine!

PISA

About 200 km far from the campsite, during your stay in Umbria and Tuscany the city of Pisa certainly deserves a visit; Pisa is known throughout the world for the wonderful Piazza dei Miracoli, declared World Heritage Site by Unesco.

Here is one of the world’s most famous monuments, the leaning tower, built in the 12th century as bell tower of the nearby Romanesque cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in addition to the baptistery dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and the Campo Santo.

The real city centre is, however, the Lungarni that comes alive especially at night with clubs, bars, lights and concerts. Pisa is also home to three of the most prestigious universities in Italy, the University of Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore and the Sant’Anna School of advanced studies.
